Armagh borough recorded 200 dog attacks in a year, with councillors citing irresponsible ownership as a major issue, praising overworked enforcement teams
Nearly 200 Dog Attacks Reported in ABC Borough
Almost 200 dog attacks have been recorded in the ABC borough over a single year. New figures reveal a growing problem linked to irresponsible dog ownership. Councillors say this issue is stretching enforcement teams thin.
Details from the Environmental Health Report
An Environmental Health Report presented at the ABC Environmental Services Committee meeting shows that 200 dog attacks were reported from April 2024 to March 2025.
The report highlights the proactive response of ABC dog wardens to complaints about dogs. It states: “Environmental Health staff, including dog wardens and environmental wardens, respond to all reports of dogs and dog fouling within play parks and recreational areas.”
Dog Control Patrols and Reports
From April 1, 2025, to December 15, 2025, about 200 dog control patrols were conducted. These patrols addressed issues like stray dogs and dog attacks.
Despite efforts to promote responsible dog ownership, the report notes a high number of stray dog reports. Dog wardens responded to 869 reports from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. This resulted in 456 dogs being impounded and 175 fixed penalty notices issued, the highest in Northern Ireland.
Consequences of Dog Attacks
The report states that approximately 200 dog attacks during the year required investigation by dog control staff. Outcomes of these attacks can include warnings, cautions, formal control conditions, or legal proceedings.
Councillor’s Concerns
Councillor Kate Evans (UUP) praised the dog wardens for their challenging work. She said, “They’re doing a fantastic job for such a small team, but some responsibility needs to be taken by the owners.”
She shared her own experience, stating, “My own dog has been attacked twice at the legs.” She expressed concern about irresponsible dog owners in the borough.
Support for Dog Wardens
Elizabeth Reaney, Director of Regulatory Services, Facilities & Assets, agreed with Councillor Evans. She praised the dog control team and encouraged people to check the DAERA website for statistics. She stated, “Our council is top-performing in the number of licences and the amount of work that we do.”
Reaney added, “They work so hard and diligently in what is a difficult job.”
