A man in his 40s from the Colchester area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. He is also suspected of failing to stop after a road accident. He has been released under investigation.

The incident occurred on the eastbound side of the Coggeshall bypass, near the junction with the B1024, around 7am on Saturday. A man in his 50s sadly died at the scene.

Essex Police reported that a van, possibly involved in the collision, was found burnt-out about three miles away in a layby near Watery Lane.

Police are urging anyone who drove on the A120 between Bradwell, Coggeshall, and Colchester from 6:30am to 7:10am on Saturday to come forward. They are particularly interested in reports of a man with grey hair and dark clothing walking alone towards Colchester.

Additionally, they seek witnesses or dashcam footage of a white van being set on fire in a layby on the westbound carriageway of the A120, near Bradwell at Watery Lane.

Inspector James Freeman from the roads policing unit stated, “This is a meticulous investigation which requires great care and attention. While a man has been arrested, I ask the public to refrain from speculation; an arrest does not imply guilt.”

Insp Freeman also appealed for information about the man seen walking on the A120 or the white van that was found fire-damaged. He encouraged anyone with dashcam footage to check it, as it could be vital to the investigation.
