Asbestos Dumped Near Priory Primary School

Asbestos was found in a black bin bag on the grass verge of Priory Link in November. This road leads to Priory Primary School in Pamber End, near Tadley.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) knew about the fly-tip and placed a notice that read, “Council Aware. DANGER ASBESTOS. Please do not touch this fly-tip.” However, the council did not remove it for several weeks.

As the bag started to break down, a resident expressed concerns about the risk it posed to the public, especially children at the nearby school.

Resident Concerns About Safety

Katie Palmer, a local resident who walks her dogs along the road, said, “This is a single-track road that becomes busy during rush hour and during school drop-off times.”

She added, “Cars often use the grass verge to create passing space, meaning there is a real risk that the bag could be seriously damaged and the asbestos would become impossible to contain.”

Katie also mentioned that weather, brambles, and wildlife could further damage the bin bag, increasing the danger to wildlife, pets, and the public, including school children.

She later observed that the bin bag had begun to deteriorate. “I inspected the bag and, worryingly, some holes and rips have already started to appear,” she said. “This is dangerous, and the council should prioritize its safe and immediate removal.”

Asbestos Removed by Council

The council confirmed that the asbestos has now been removed. A spokesperson for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council stated, “The fly-tip in Priory Link was reported to us and then cleared on Friday, December 12, 2025.”

They added, “We have attended the site today (January 5) and can confirm that no additional fly-tipping has taken place in this location.”
