Yorkshire Building Society Hosts Fraud Awareness Event
The Yorkshire Building Society branch in Bridlington will hold an event at Bridlington Library on King Street. This event is scheduled for 21st January 2026, from 10:00 to 12:00. It aims to help people learn about financial fraud and scams, how to protect themselves, and what to do if they fall victim to scammers.
The event is open to the public and Yorkshire Building Society customers. It will include advice on spotting common types of financial scams. Participants will receive information and tools to help keep their money safe.
Statistics on Financial Scams
Research from Yorkshire Building Society shows that nearly three-fifths (56%) of UK adults have faced some form of scam. Online scams are the most common (56%), followed by phishing attacks (55%) and identity theft (20%). Adults aged 55 and older are most likely to be targeted by online scams (60%). However, younger people aged 18-34 are more likely to be deceived by scams. Those who reported losing money to scams said they lost an average of £344, which rises to £420 for those aged 18-34.

Tracey Ibbotson from Yorkshire Building Society in Bridlington stated, “Most people have come into contact with a financial scam at some point in their lives, and fraudsters are using many different techniques to try and get to people’s information and money.”
She added, “By hosting our fraud session, we hope to reach as many people as possible in Bridlington to raise awareness around this issue. We’ll be talking about the common types of fraud and actions to take if you think you have come into contact with a scam.”

Yorkshire Building Society is part of the Take Five national campaign led by UK Finance. This campaign is backed by the Government and offers straightforward advice to help everyone protect themselves from preventable financial fraud. This includes email deception, phone-based scams, and online fraud, especially where criminals impersonate trusted organizations.
