Paul Hughes retires after 19 years as supervisor at North Bridlington Library, leaving a legacy of community impact and health initiatives in Bridlington

Paul Hughes Retires from North Bridlington Library
After 19 years of dedicated service, Paul Hughes retired from his role as supervisor at North Bridlington Library on Christmas Eve. His career has made a lasting impact on the community he served.
Career Journey
Paul Hughes had a varied career. He initially worked as an ecologist before joining the NHS as a biomedical scientist for 25 years. In 2006, he moved from the Outer Hebrides to Yorkshire for what he thought would be a short-term library position.
“I assumed this job would only be temporary, but I’ve enjoyed it so much that it’s turned out to be the longest temporary job I’ve ever had!” he said.
Library Highlights
Paul mentioned that the highlights of his time at the library were “too numerous to mention.” He particularly valued seeing the library grow into a community hub. One of his proudest achievements was establishing a reading group for people with learning difficulties.
“When they first visited, they were nervous and huddled together, looking at the ground. Now the library is full of laughter when they come in,” he added.
Health Projects and Community Engagement
Paul also championed health projects offered through libraries. He noted, “It seems odd that we MOT our cars every year but never check up on the one machine we can’t replace—our bodies.” Now, people can visit the library to monitor their health.
Love for Books and Authors
Although modern libraries offer more than books, Paul enjoyed being surrounded by them. He participated in the East Riding Festival of Words and interviewed many authors. He fondly remembers novelist Christy Lefteri and recommends her book, The Beekeeper of Aleppo.
Future Plans
Paul praised librarian Tara Foxon and the “excellent team” at North Bridlington Library. He is confident the service “will continue to grow.” In retirement, he plans to return to his ecological roots with volunteer projects in marine biology and ornithology. He also looks forward to traveling with his wife.
Paul added, “You’ll definitely find me visiting my local library.”
