Lidl in Caithness celebrates an ancient Scottish Christmas with £6 vouchers available starting January 6 for Lidl Plus users.
Lidl is celebrating an ancient Scottish Christmas tradition by offering £6 vouchers to shoppers in Caithness. The promotion starts on Tuesday, January 6, a date traditionally recognized as Christmas Day in Scotland, and is still observed by some today.
To participate in the Little Lidl Christmas event, 1,000 Lidl Plus users need to enter their details at www.littlelidlchristmas.com to receive the voucher.
January 6 is also known as the Feast of the Epiphany or ‘Little Christmas,’ marking the end of the festive season. For centuries, this day was celebrated as Christmas in Scotland, and some communities continue this tradition.
Lidl is hosting a Little Christmas celebration this year, offering £6 off purchases exclusively to 1,000 Lidl Plus users in Scotland. This tradition has ancient Celtic roots, known in Gaelic as Nollaig Bheag. It was customary to burn a Yule log, symbolizing hopes for a prosperous new year and an early spring.
Other customs included lighting candles in windows to ward off evil spirits and bringing the embers from the Yule log indoors, similar to a modern Christmas tree. These practices date back to when Scotland followed the Julian calendar, and some communities, like Foula in the Shetland Islands, still observe them today, although their celebrations resemble those of December 25.
To enjoy a Little Lidl Christmas treat, Lidl Plus users must enter their details at www.littlelidlchristmas.com. The site will be live from January 5, with vouchers redeemable from January 6 until January 19. However, once they’re gone, they’re gone!
