The shopfront of The Crafty Cockney pie and mash at 103 High Street, Canvey, was destroyed at about 5 PM on Wednesday.

A delivery driver collecting from the store leaned over the vehicle when it jolted forward and crashed through the shopfront window.

Owner’s Statement on the Incident

Lee Dennis, 56, the business owner, said: “The car shot forward and absolutely destroyed the shopfront – there were tables along the front window that staff had cleared just as the car came through.”

He added, “We’re open for business as usual as the shop was boarded up last night by about 11:30, but we’ll have to replace the whole shopfront which is a massive inconvenience.”

Police were called and responded to the incident.

Lee and his wife Debbie, 58, said customer support has been great in the first 24 hours since the incident. They praised the strong customer base the shop has built.

Lee added, “The response from our loyal customers has been terrific, and we’ve had lots of support. The community is strong round here, especially at this shop.”
