Chester Zoo in Chester achieved a record 2.1 million visits in 2025, marking its highest attendance since opening in 1931
Chester Zoo Sets New Visitor Record in 2025
Chester Zoo welcomed over 2.1 million visitors in 2025. This marks a new all-time record for the zoo.
New figures show that 2,136,224 people visited the zoo last year. This breaks all previous attendance records since the zoo opened in 1931.
It is the first time the zoo has reached the 2.1 million visitor mark. The previous record was 2,086,785, set in 2019 before the pandemic.
Major Developments at Chester Zoo
Last year, the zoo launched two major developments. In spring, it opened the Heart of Africa, the largest zoo habitat in the UK.
This 22-acre habitat is home to over 57 highly threatened African species. It showcases the zoo’s conservation projects in Central and East Africa.
Later in the year, the zoo unveiled The Reserve, a hotel with 51 luxury lodges. Guests can see giraffes, zebras, and antelopes from their balconies.
Impact of Visitor Support
Zoo officials say funds from these developments have led to important conservation breakthroughs worldwide. Jamie Christon, CEO of Chester Zoo, shared his thoughts on the record year.
He stated, “2025 has been a truly remarkable year for Chester Zoo. To welcome more than 2.1 million visitors is an extraordinary achievement.”
Christon emphasized that this success is due to the support of visitors, staff, and volunteers. Their efforts have helped open the UK’s largest zoo habitat and launch a new conservation-led hotel.
Conservation Successes
The zoo also had successes in its breeding programs. It celebrated the birth of a snow leopard cub, a first for the charity.
Other births included the UK’s only fossa pups and eight Socorro dove chicks. These birds were declared extinct in the wild in the 1970s.
The zoo welcomed several endangered animals, including two Asiatic lions and two Asian elephants. Each animal plays a vital role in safeguarding its species.
Global Conservation Efforts
Kirsten Pullen, Chief Conservation Officer, noted the impact of visitor support. She said, “Every ticket funds vital conservation work.”
Pullen highlighted projects in 20 countries across Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. These initiatives combine science, research, and local community involvement.
She added, “By connecting people to wildlife, we can create lasting change for generations.”
