In Darlington, the DL1 leisure complex faces challenges ahead of its ten-year anniversary, with closures and empty units raising concerns.
DL1, a leisure complex in Darlington, is approaching its ten-year anniversary amid growing concerns about its future. The site, which opened on June 25, 2016, is currently operating at less than half capacity, with only five of its eleven units open.
This year has been particularly tough for DL1, starting with the closure of the Brazilian restaurant Estabulo in January. Estabulo has since relocated to a new site in the town center. In July, Bella Italia also closed after more than nine years at DL1, which was described as a “hammer blow” for the complex.
Darlington’s Conservative leader, Jonathan Dulston, criticized the lack of a clear plan for the site, calling it “indefensible” that so many units remain empty. He emphasized the need for a complete rethink of DL1 to ensure it serves the community effectively.
Despite the challenges, Darlington Borough Council’s deputy leader, Chris McEwan, acknowledged the potential of DL1, urging residents to visit and support the remaining businesses. He stated that every visit helps maintain the mix of services that are vital for the town center’s economy.
