Upcoming Road Works and Closures in Darlington

Here are the ones you should be aware of:

Blackwell, Darlington – Bridge Road to Carmel Road South

Northern Gas Networks will carry out a substantial programme of repairs on the stretch from the junction with Bridge Road to Carmel Road South in Blackwell, Darlington. The works are due to begin on January 5 and are scheduled to continue until April 15. During this time, the road will be closed to motorists. The project involves replacing existing gas pipes.

Coniscliffe Road – Two-Way Signals for Water Mains Renewal

On Coniscliffe Road, at number 210, Northumbrian Water will conduct essential maintenance between January 6 and January 9. Two-way traffic signals will be introduced to allow for the safe renewal of a water service due to lead content. The work will involve excavation to a depth of roughly 750mm, laying new pipes, installing a new chamber, and updating customer connections. Signals are expected to cause some delay, and motorists are advised to plan ahead.

Clifton Road West Back – Temporary Closure for Sewer Works

From January 6 to January 9, Clifton Road West Back, from the rear of number 78 to 128, will be closed for lining works to the sewer. Northumbrian Water is carrying out these utility repairs with no excavation needed.

Woodland Road – Gas Mains Upgrades and Traffic Controls

Residents in the Woodland Road area should prepare for multiple disruptions from January 5. Northern Gas Networks will operate multi-way signals between house numbers 167 and 175 from January 5 through February 3. The job will see 35 metres of 180mm PE gas pipe replaced, including multiple connections, relays, and transfers, as part of an ongoing project. Additionally, a contra-flow system will be introduced at 190 Woodland Road from January 5 to January 9 while Northumbrian Water addresses a leak. The process will require excavation to locate and repair the defect on the main pipe, and the contra-flow is designed to keep traffic moving in both directions but could cause congestion at peak times.

Thompson Street East – Power Cable Installation

Northern Powergrid (Northeast) Limited is continuing work between Davison Road and Salters Lane on Thompson Street East until January 30. Two-way traffic signals will control the flow of vehicles while crews excavate roughly 500 metres of the footway to install a new underground electric cable. The project includes making connections to the existing power network.

Barmpton Lane – Electric Cable Works

Works are also ongoing along Barmpton Lane, from Whinbush Way to 23a, by Northern Powergrid (Northeast) Limited. Two-way signals remain in place for the extensive task of laying new underground electric cables, including two separate road crossings. This part of the project is scheduled to continue through February 20.

North Road East Back and Holmwood Grove Closures

Northern Gas Networks will carry out closure works along North Road East Back, Harrowgate Hill, and at Holmwood Grove from January 5 to January 30. North Road East Back works include replacing more than 42 metres of pipe, with similar efforts on Holmwood Grove, where over 100 metres of aging cast iron pipe will be replaced with modern materials. A give and take system also comes into force on North Road at the Holmwood Grove junction during the same period.

Harrowgate Village and Beaumont Hill – Long-Term Improvement Works

Finally, long-term road closures on Dewberry Lane to the Village Hall in Harrowgate Village, and from Dewberry Lane to 25 Beaumont Hill, remain in place for highway improvement works linked to new development. Both closures started in March 2025 and are set to continue until March 27.
