Edinburgh councillors approved a 392-home development with student flats near the Corn Exchange after Scottish Government review
Development Next to Corn Exchange in Edinburgh Under Review
The major development next to the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh was reviewed by councillors after scrutiny by the Scottish Government.
The project includes a mix of homes and student flats. The Scottish Government called in the development.
Manson from Watkin Jones Group stated, “Watkin Jones Group will deliver the entire project as the developer, contractor, and operator of the purpose-built student accommodation.”
It is proposed that there will be around 392 Build to Rent apartments. These will include studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom flats.
Additionally, “A hundred of these flats are within a separate affordable block with its own ancillary space and entrance.”
Proposed amenities include areas for working from home and study space, a communal lounge, exercise facilities, a management suite, reception, bike storage, and a large shared kitchen.
External communal spaces at ground level and a landscaped roof terrace will also be part of the amenities.
There are around 406 student bed spaces proposed. These will be a mix of studio and cluster rooms, each with its own ensuite.
Council papers noted that “the Scottish Ministers issued their decision that they are minded to grant planning permission for the proposed development.”
This matter needs to go to committee for a decision on the recommended terms of the planning obligation agreement. This is necessary because the city plan has been adopted since the application was originally minded to grant.
Councillors discussed the topic at a subcommittee meeting. They agreed to follow the planning office’s recommendation while continuing discussions with the chief planning officer.
