Mattie Lennon, Respected GAA Coach, Passes Away
The GAA community in Armagh and Ulster is mourning the loss of coach Mattie Lennon. He was highly respected in the sports community.
Career Highlights
Mattie Lennon represented Armagh at all levels as a hurler. He managed the county from 2006 to 2008. He also managed the Armagh U21 footballers after the county’s 2002 All-Ireland win. In 2021, he coached the Armagh camogs.
In 2012, he was in charge of Monaghan when they reached the Division 3A final. He had two terms as the head of Tyrone hurling. In his first term from 2014 to 2015, he won the Nicky Rackard Cup and helped the team achieve league promotions.
Tributes and Legacy
Derrynoose GAC led the tributes for Mattie, calling him an “esteemed gael.” The club stated, “Mattie has been the heartbeat of our club for many years.” He nurtured young players from grassroots to senior levels.
Mattie held many positions in the club, most recently as a senior coach. He played and won senior championship medals with his brothers for Middletown. He was part of the Armagh GAA Football Junior Ulster winning team in 1985 and the Hurling Junior All-Ireland winning team in 2000.
Family and Funeral Arrangements
Mattie is survived by his wife Úna and sons Michael and Matthew. He was also the son of the late Mick and Alice. A funeral notice stated he passed away peacefully surrounded by family.
His remains will be at his residence, 4 Ashley Hill, Armagh BT60 1EJ, from Thursday evening until removal on Sunday. The Requiem Mass will be at St Mochua’s Church Derrynoose at 12 Noon, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
Visitation Details
Family welcomes visitors on Friday and Saturday from 12 Noon to 9 PM. The house will be private outside these hours. Parking is available at the old Armagh potato company, 98-100 Newry Rd, Armagh BT60 1ER, with a shuttle service to the wake home.
