In Deptford, the Fitness Laboratory offers a supportive gym environment focused on community and personal growth.
In Deptford’s creative quarter, the Fitness Laboratory is changing the local gym experience. Opened in May 2025 by former headteacher Darrel Barsby, the gym emphasizes community and support.
Darrel, who has 23 years of teaching experience and four years of training, aims to provide a caring environment often lacking in larger gyms. He believes that many people feel intimidated by traditional fitness spaces.
“The thing that normal people lack is the knowledge of what to do and how to do it in the gym,” he said. The gym is designed to be open and welcoming, with Darrel or one of two personal trainers available at all times.
The Fitness Laboratory features top-of-the-line equipment and a unique design element: walls lined with personalized training plans written on cardboard. Darrel explained, “I write everything, to start with, on cardboard. They’ve become a thing, people love them.”
Members range from beginners to experienced lifters. After a few weeks, training plans transition from cardboard to an app developed with a programmer. This app helps users track their progress and allows for adjustments to their routines.
Darrel also sends a weekly newsletter with training revisions and an exercise of the week, complete with video demonstrations. Elliot Sturt, a 31-year-old drag queen, shared that the gym has made him feel comfortable and confident, attending five to six days a week.
Fabio Baravelle, 31, a software engineer, uses the gym for powerlifting and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. He appreciates the supportive community and often films his workouts to analyze his form.
Memberships are priced at £150 per month, with discounts available for students and seniors at £90 per month.
