A new initiative in Peel will offer free weekly meals at the Philip Christian Centre every Thursday from January 22, aiming to address food insecurity and social isolation in the community.
New Community Initiative ‘The Shared Table’ Launches This Month
A new community initiative is starting this month to help those in need this winter. The project, called ‘The Shared Table,’ aims to provide food and reduce loneliness by offering free shared meals in a warm space.
Volunteers will open the Philip Christian Centre in Peel every Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM, starting on January 22.
Organizers and Goals of ‘The Shared Table’
Rachel O’Connor, 33, is one of the organizers of ‘The Shared Table.’ She runs the Paw Patrol doggy daycare business in Douglas. Rachel said the initiative focuses on dignity, connection, and inclusion, not just food.
“There’s no referral process, no judgement and no labels,” Rachel said. “People don’t need to explain why they’re here. Everyone deserves a seat at the table.”
Once launched, ‘The Shared Table’ will welcome individuals and families.
Volunteer Qualifications and Sustainability Efforts
All volunteers will have valid food hygiene certificates, first aid qualifications, and will undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
The team plans to use online apps like Olio to source meal ingredients, aiming to reduce food waste and promote sustainability.
Meal Details and Donations
The meals will be simple, home-cooked dishes served in a relaxed setting. Guests can choose to stay and chat or eat quietly and leave.
While meals are free, donation envelopes will be available at the entrance for those who wish to contribute. Organizers stress that donations are not expected, and no one will be judged for not giving.
Community Focus and Support
All reasons for attending are valid, whether someone is struggling financially, finding it hard to cook for one, or simply seeking community. Rachel added, “We want to make sure there isn’t a stigma around this – it isn’t a soup kitchen; we want it to be somewhere people look forward to visiting.”
Organizers want the weekly events to feel welcoming, where people can bring friends, neighbors, or family without stigma.
People can support the project by volunteering, donating food or funds, or following updates on their Facebook page ‘The Shared Table – Peel.’ Rachel concluded, “The door will always be open.”
