Glasgow has built more than 700 new cycle storage spaces, aiming for 3,000 over five years to meet rising demand.
Each storage unit can hold up to six bicycles, providing residents with safe and reliable places to store their bikes. Glasgow City Council aims to install a total of 3,000 cycle storage spaces over five years.
Since the pilot program began in 2021, the council has successfully delivered 1,700 spaces across 300 locations. Currently, the units, managed by Cyclehoop, are 95% full, with over 2,300 residents on a waiting list.
The annual cost for a storage space is £84. This announcement follows the recent change in Glasgow’s public cycle scheme operator in November. The previous operator, nextbike by TIER, ended its eleven-year service, and the council awarded a five-year contract to the Swedish firm Voi.
In August, Councillor Angus Millar, the council’s climate and transport convener, expressed satisfaction with the new operator. He stated, “On-street cycle hire offers a practical, cost-effective option to people who may not own a bike to get about the city, and in securing the scheme’s next phase of delivery with our new operator we look forward to building on its success.”
