Narberth will host the next Probus Club lunch on January 29, featuring Keith Johnson’s talk titled ‘A Pembrokeshire Pub Crawl.’
The next Club lunch meeting of Narberth and District Probus will take place on January 29 at the Old Board School Guest House in St Clears, starting at 12:30 PM.
Keith Johnson, a former editor of Pembrokeshire Life, will be the guest speaker. His talk is titled ‘A Pembrokeshire Pub Crawl.’
At the last meeting, over 40 members and their partners enjoyed a Christmas Lunch at the Old Board School Guest House. President David Thomas welcomed Gareth Mills, who gave a talk about the Stackpole estate.
Gareth Mills, the guest speaker at the December meeting, has a background in history and has taught in secondary schools across South and West Wales. He also worked in Local Government as a Change Manager for Education and Lifelong Learning and was an Assistant Director of Education.
Gareth is a Trustee of the Sunderland Trust and a tour guide at Pembroke Castle. He has authored two books and frequently speaks to local organizations.
During his talk, Gareth outlined the history of Stackpole, from its Bronze Age settlement to its Norman roots. He discussed the Campbell Cawdor family, who developed the estate in the 18th and 19th centuries, and their ownership of properties in Carmarthenshire and Scotland.
He also detailed the mansion’s decline during World War II, the transfer of most of the estate to the MOD at Castlemartin Range, and its revival under the National Trust.
Gareth illustrated his presentation with slides of rare photos and images. A vote of thanks was given by Peter Lakey.
