Liverpool Road in Warrington faces closures as flood risk management project resumes, with phases affecting traffic and bus services for weeks
Restart of Liverpool Road Flood Risk Management Project in Warrington
The Liverpool Road flood risk management project in Warrington resumed on Monday, January 5, after a pause for the Christmas period. Surrounding businesses and residents are advised to prepare for disruptions.
The project is currently ahead of schedule. It has already included the installation of a new drainage system and a power supply for a pumping station.
Warrington Borough Council stated, “Due to the very difficult nature of the works, disruption for road users is anticipated.”
Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible and to follow the official signed diversion. The council apologized for any inconvenience caused and thanked residents for their patience and understanding.
Details of Project Phases
| Phase | Description | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| A and B | Closure of Liverpool Road between Marina Avenue and Hood Lane, including the junction. | Approximately 3 weeks |
| C | Closure of Hood Lane between Liverpool Road and Huntley Street, 24/7. | Approximately 3 weeks, starting January 26 |
| D | Ongoing works with no full road closures planned. | Starting February 16 |
During Phase A and B, Liverpool Road will be closed from 9 am to 5 pm. This will affect bus services along the route, which will resume as soon as possible after these phases are complete. Information about affected routes will be available at stops before and during the project.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Vehicular access will be managed by the Principal Contractor, with alternative routes signposted. These routes include Old Liverpool Road, Thewlis Street, Sankey Green Roundabout, A57 Sankey Way, and A562 Penketh Road.
During Phase C, Liverpool Road will reopen, while Hood Lane will remain closed. Phase D will see ongoing works, but no full road closures are planned, although narrow lanes and temporary traffic signals may be needed on Liverpool Road between Hood Lane and Marina Avenue.
The council has expressed gratitude to residents and road users for their patience during the works. Equipment and machinery have been cleared from the site to allow the full reopening of the road and footways over the festive period.
