Malcolm Lees, one of the longest-serving volunteers at the Llangollen and Corwen Railway, has retired after completing his final shift. He is known as the railway’s last Steam Era footplate crew member and drove his last services on the final operational day of the year.

Malcolm worked for British Railways (Western Region) and was based in Shrewsbury and Bescot. He later became well-known at Llangollen shed during the preservation era. Supporters gathered on his last day to thank him for his service, and he received a painting of the railway as a gift.

Malcolm described his time at the railway as a “huge privilege.” He said, “The people here are like family, and the railway itself gets under your skin.” He expressed pride in their achievements and gratitude for the friendships made over the years.

His railway career began in the mid-1960s as a cleaner in Salop, later becoming a fireman. After being made redundant due to dieselisation, he started at Llangollen as a cleaner, then progressed to fireman and driver.

Trust Manager David Hennigan praised Malcolm and the railway volunteers, stating, “Malcolm represents the very best of this railway. He has been our last link to the steam era footplate.” He added that Malcolm’s final day celebrated not just his contributions but the dedication of all volunteers.

Hennigan noted that their Christmas season was sold out, thanks to volunteers working at their best. He mentioned plans to launch the 2026 season soon, expressing optimism for the future. “Enjoy your retirement, Mal,” he concluded.
