East Suffolk Council revoked The Carousel pub’s licence in Lowestoft due to drug offences, public nuisance, and non-cooperation, following police evidence
Pub Licence Revoked Due to Drug Offences and Public Nuisance
A pub’s licence has been revoked after concerns about drug offences and public nuisance.
East Suffolk councillors voted to remove the licence from The Carousel, located on High Street in Lowestoft, following a representation from Suffolk Police.
Mr. John Corkett, the licensing officer for the constabulary, informed councillors that the force faced ‘considerable difficulty’ in maintaining contact with Ms. Chloe Godbold, who took over the pub in December 2023.
He stated that Ms. Godbold, who was absent from the meeting, had ignored advice aimed at addressing ongoing issues and breaches of the licence.
These issues included incidents of assault, drug offences, and public nuisance.
In one incident from December 2023, Mr. Corkett’s report noted a serious assault that resulted in severe brain damage to one man.
The constabulary also indicated evidence of the premises being used for drug supply.
Additionally, a family with small children living above the pub reported months of disturbances due to activities continuing until 3 a.m., well past the pub’s closing time.
The pub was permitted to operate until 12:30 a.m. from Monday to Saturday and until 11 p.m. on Sundays.
Information supporting the constabulary’s claims was noted as recent as Wednesday, January 7.
Most of the meeting was held in private to protect sensitive information.
Councillors decided to revoke the licence based on evidence of drug supply, public nuisance, and Ms. Godbold’s lack of cooperation.
