Travel Disruption Due to Monks Lane Closure in Newbury

Residents are advised to prepare for significant travel disruption as Monks Lane in Newbury will close for over four months.

The closure starts on January 12 and will last until May 22. It will affect the area from the junction of Andover Road and Essex Street to the entrance of the Newbury Rugby Football Club, Wash Common Pharmacy, and David Lloyd.

This long-term closure is necessary for the installation of new sewer infrastructure. The current network cannot handle modern volumes, causing foul smells and overflows during peak usage.

Crews will install a new wastewater pumping station and a foul water main. This upgrade aims to provide a permanent solution to drainage issues, benefiting the rugby club and nearby businesses.

Despite the closure, the community will remain functional. Residential access will be maintained, and emergency services will have access at all times.

Local businesses and healthcare providers, including David Lloyd, the pharmacy, Monks Lane Surgery, and the Rugby Club, will stay open and accessible.

Drivers should note that the part of Monks Lane from Newbury College will remain open. These facilities can be reached from that direction, as the closure targets the side bordering Essex Street and Andover Road.

Transport for students has also been considered in the planning. Several school bus services, including CCA, 2A, 2C, 3, 4C, 6, and 8, will have access through the closure area at specific times to ensure students reach their destinations.

However, regular public services like the 2, the 103, and the West Berkshire Community Connect on-demand services will be diverted. Passengers are encouraged to visit the West Berkshire Council website for updates on disrupted timetables.
