The Essex Horse and Pony Protection Society (EHPPS) in Pitsea has started an appeal for temporary foster homes for horses and ponies. This initiative will last until the end of April due to restrictions on grazing and limited stabling during winter.

A spokesperson from the charity stated, “These horses and ponies are currently available as part of our temporary winter foster scheme.” The winter foster program runs until the end of April, but if a fosterer falls in love with their pony, they can continue fostering full-time afterward.

If you decide to foster, the society will cover costs for farrier services, vaccinations, medication, and other necessary treatments during the fostering period. However, the fosterer will be responsible for daily care, including the costs of livery, hay, and feed.

Several horses and ponies are available for fostering. They include:

Name Age Breed Height Special Needs
Millie 13 Thoroughbred 16.3hh Companion-only, suffers from ulcers
Marley 11 Cob 12.2hh Companion, requires secure fencing, has laminitis and ulcers
Emma 22 Standardbred 15.2hh Companion, has a visible hernia-type lump

The charity emphasizes that this program is not ‘first come, first served.’ They noted, “If we receive multiple applications for the same pony, we will place them with the fosterer best suited to them.” They added, “Do not be offended if you are not chosen – we really are grateful for these offers of support during the winter months.”

The Essex Horse and Pony Protection Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming horses and ponies.
