Wrexham Family to Climb Mt Toubkal for Children’s Hospice
A Wrexham family aims to reach the snowy summit of Mt Toubkal in Morocco. They are raising funds for Tŷ Gobaith, North Wales’ only children’s hospice.
Becky Landon and her group of six will tackle the 13,671ft challenge this month. They will fly out on Friday, the 9th.
The family supports the hospice because of a close friend. Becky Robertson’s daughter, Bethan, has Dravet syndrome, a rare genetic epilepsy. Bethan has attended Tŷ Gobaith since she was 18 months old.
Becky’s Experience with Tŷ Gobaith
Becky Landon is a Paediatric Nurse at Wrexham’s Maelor Hospital. She said, “Tŷ Gobaith is a vital place for children and families.”
Becky has known Becky Robertson for about 18 years. They met at a parent and toddler group when their children were born around the same time.
Becky added, “With my job and friendship with Becky, I have seen first-hand the brilliant care they receive there.”
She mentioned the support Bethan receives, including respite and counselling.
Family Involvement in the Trek
On the trek, Becky will be joined by her daughter, Evie, her two brothers, and her nephew and his wife. This makes it a family affair.
Last year, Evie provided one-to-one care for Bethan. When the family signed up for the challenge, Evie suggested raising money for the hospice.
Support from Bethan’s Mother
“Becky has been through thick and thin with us,” said Bethan’s mother. “She has been invaluable in Bethan’s care when she’s been in and out of the hospital.”
She praised Becky for visiting and helping them understand the medical side of things. “She’s been there in the tough times and the good times,” she said.
About the hospice, she said, “Bethan is treated like an absolute princess at Tŷ Gobaith. We feel very safe when she’s in their care.”
Advocacy and Support
“It’s not just the respite though – they really advocate for us as a family,” she added. “A lot of the medical world is new to us.”
She appreciates the staff for sending letters and emails to help them understand things better. “I know I can always pick up the phone,” she said.
Fundraising Support
Wrexham area fundraiser Bethan Young said, “This is such an exciting and meaningful challenge.”
She noted that the family knows the difference their support makes to Bethan. “We are right behind them every step of the way,” she said.
Young expressed gratitude for their fundraising efforts, which will help create quality moments for children and families living with life-threatening conditions.
